The Cuba Libre was born in Cuba 🇨🇺 (yeah, you guessed it right😉) after the country’s independence following the Spanish-American war. The drink’s name “Cuba Libre” (which literally means Free Cuba), was the slogan used by the Cuban independence movement during those years.
The drink is usually made by mixing white rum with Coca-Cola, so it was impossible to achieve this version of the cocktail before Cuba’s independence, the moment in which the country was finally able to import goods from the United States.
Apparently, the first Cuba Libre was ordered by some American soldiers in Havana in 1902. They went to a bar and asked for some rum and coke (which was largely used in the US as a way of disguising the bad taste of low quality rums available in the country at the time). At that time, Cuba had just become an independent country, and everybody was celebrating the great victory by chanting “Cuba Libre!”.
This gave birth to one of the most famous and popular cocktails of the last century, and of today. According to Bacardi, the Cuba Libre is the second most popular alcoholic drink in the world.🤙🏼🥈
